Side Effects of some COVID Vaccines

Today, COVID-19 vaccines are developed all over the world using science that has been in existence for decades.

Having gone through all the necessary stages of clinical trials,  extensive testing and the most intensive safety monitoring, studies have shown that these vaccines are safe and effective.

COVID-19 vaccines are considered very effective because:

  1. They can keep you from getting and circulating the virus that causes COVID-19
  2. They help in keeping you from getting seriously sick even if you have been infected with COVID-19.
  3. It helps protect people around you, particularly people at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19.

How different vaccines work

Pfizer-BioNTech Vaccine:

A vaccine recommended for people 12 years and older, individuals who are taking this vaccine would have to take 2 shots, 21 days apart. However, some immunocompromised people should get 3 shots.

Possible side effects of this vaccine include;

  1. Pain in the arm
  2. Redness of the arm
  3. Swelling of the arm
  4. Excessive Tiredness
  5. Splitting Headaches
  6. Muscle pain
  7. Fever and Chills
  8. Nausea

Who should not be given the Pfizer shot

  1. Individuals who have had a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) or an immediate allergic reaction, even if it was not severe, to any ingredient in the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.
  2. Any person who has had very severe or reacted immediately after receiving their first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.
  3. Any person who has had a severe or immediate severe allergic reaction that needs to be treated with epinephrine or EpiPen or with medical care.

Moderna

A vaccine recommended for people 18 years and older, individuals who are taking this vaccine would have to take 2 shots, 28 days apart. However, some immunocompromised people should get 3 shots.

Possible side effects of this vaccine include;

  1. Pain in the arm
  2. Redness of the arm
  3. Swelling of the arm
  4. Excessive Tiredness
  5. Splitting Headaches
  6. Muscle pain
  7. Fever and Chills
  8. Nausea

Who should not be given the Moderna Shot

  1. People who have had a severe allergic reaction or an immediate allergic reaction, even if it was not severe, to any ingredient in an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine
  2. People who had a severe or immediate allergic reaction after getting the first dose of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine should not take a second
  3. People who have had a severe or immediate severe allergic reaction that needs to be treated with epinephrine or EpiPen.
  4. People who have had immediate allergic reactions within 4 hours of getting the shot, including symptoms such as hives, swelling, or wheezing.

Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen

A vaccine is recommended for people 18 years and older, individuals who are taking this vaccine would have to take 1 shot.

Possible side effects of this vaccine include;

  1. Pain in the arm
  2. Redness of the arm
  3. Swelling of the arm
  4. Excessive Tiredness
  5. Splitting Headaches
  6. Muscle pain
  7. Fever and Chills
  8. Nausea

Who should not be given the Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen shot

Anyone who;

  1. Has had a severe allergic reaction to any ingredient in Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine.
  2. Has had an immediate severe allergic reaction that needs to be treated with EpiPen or medical care.
  3. Has had an immediate allergic reaction within 4 hours of getting the shot.
