How to travel with confidence during the pandemic

There is still much skepticism regards coronavirus and its impact on the travel and tourism sector. While some nations are opening their borders and in-country services are starting to resume, the situation around the world remains fluid.

If you must fly, do it more safely: Flying, as with any activity that brings you close to other people, does carry more risk than driving in a car. But crowded security and boarding areas are likely more of a concern than the planes themselves.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), before you decide to embark on a journey,  the first thing you need to assess is whether you are sick. If you have any symptoms, stay home.

How then can you test to be sure you are not sick before travelling? We recommend you carry out either the PCR Swab test or an Antigen test.

PCR Swab test:

You may consider an at-home test if you have symptoms of COVID-19 and are you can’t get tested by a healthcare provider at that given time. One of the recommended tests you could carry out is the PCR Swab test.

A Polymerase Chain Reaction test recognizes the genetic material of coronavirus in a patients’ mucus or spit. The test could also detect fragments of the virus even after you are no longer infected.

It Identifies the virus at the time of testing regardless of whether the patient has symptoms or not.

Today, a negative PCR swab test report is presently required by most airlines for travel purposes.

Antigen Test:

An antigen test checks if your immune system has responded to coronavirus. Unlike the PCR test which requires testing mucus or spit, the Antigen test requires testing your blood.

Best practices for keeping safe while travelling

If your trip is important and if you have been observing social distancing and wearing a mask, it is possible to mitigate (but not eliminate) COVID-19 risks during travel by carrying out the following practices.

  •  While you’re at the airport, make sure you maintain social distancing guidelines.  Stay six feet away from others whenever possible.
  • Wash or sanitize your hands frequently
  • Wear a mask at all times. Doing this will protect individuals that come close to you to have a chat.
  •  If you must touch any surfaces, pay attention to every surface you touch. Also, have plenty of hand sanitizer available and ready to use frequently throughout your journey.
  • If you can, try to maintain social distancing on the plane as well, sitting away from other passengers.
  • Finally, if you don’t feel comfortable travelling yet, contact your airline and try to move your trip.
