How to keep safe while abroad during the Covid 19 pandemic

As COVID-19 cases keep rising and falling around the world, some countries have opened their borders to travellers.

An increasing number of nations now require proof of a negative COVID-19 test before travellers depart their own country or upon arrival. Travellers who test positive on arrival may be required to quarantine.

Ps: Some countries require all travellers to undergo a period of quarantine, whether or not they provide a negative test result).

Despite precautions being taken, COVID-19 has not gone away – it remains a serious risk throughout the world. In recent weeks, new surges in cases and new variants of the virus have caused some nations (in Europe and elsewhere) to tighten their entry requirements again. Other countries and regions, thinking they’re over the worst, have lowered restrictions, only to see cases rise again.

While some countries are allowing evidence of vaccination for entry, others are using a negative COVID-19 test. It will take a long time before the vaccine is given to everyone, and it would take longer for large proportions of the population to be considered immune to COVID.

If you choose to travel in the meantime, here are some ways you do so safely?

  1. Check the government travel information of your country and the country you are travelling to

Before you embark on a trip, check your government travel advisory, and follow its advice.

Bear in mind that even if the status of your destination is “safe to travel”, government travel information may change at very short notice, putting you and your safety at risk.

Depending on where you’re returning from, you may be expected to quarantine on arrival and If you cannot afford the extra costs or loss of work associated with quarantining, you should consider travelling domestically instead of overseas for now.

  1. Ensure you carry out a test before, during, and even after your trip

Even though it may not help you avoid quarantine, you still need to take a coronavirus test in the days before you leave. We recommend that you take a PCR Swab test kit on you during your travel.

Getting a negative result will reduce the odds you’ll unknowingly bring the virus to your destination.

You already know many airlines mandate that you get a Fit-to-Fly certificate before you can be allowed on board.

  1. Decide on your means of transportation

Driving may the safest form of transportation now, especially if the destination can be reached within a day but flying can also be relatively safe, as long as proper precautions are taken.

  1. Decide on where you will stay

Fortunately, many hotels and guest houses are now paying special attention to sanitizing guest rooms and common areas. Some are also “buffering” rooms by keeping them unoccupied for a day or two between guests to allow any virus in the air sufficient time to diminish.

Ensure you call beforehand to ask about hotel procedures before you lodge.

  1. Don’t let your guard down

It is easy to feel like the limitations of your regular life don apply while on vacation. However, there are no metaphysical protections that can keep the virus at bay just because you are having the time of your life.

It’s important to follow general guidance-washing hands regularly, avoiding touching your face as much as possible, keeping 6 (or ideally more) feet of distance between yourself and others, and, wearing a mask in all public settings.

Hope you found this helpful.
